Make the holidays magical

Nothing brings more joy than a handwoven gift. It’s a piece of your heart, as unique and beautiful as you. It’s something to be treasured for years to come.

Weaving for your loved ones is a gift for you, too!

It’s joy in creating something that you know will be loved and used. It’s anticipation of their delight as they unwrap the gift. And it’s the warm glow of their surprise and admiration when they see your creation.

No matter how much weaving experience you have, it’s a chance to share the craft you love with those you love.

Great gifts on time

You want to create something that tells your loved one how special they are.

“I want to weave things where my relatives will say, 50 years from now, “Oh, that was one of grandma’s! With singers or musicians, you can always tell a person who has put a piece of their soul into their music. It comes out in their music.

And I think that the Handweaving Academy teaches us how to put that piece of our soul into our weaving. Not to just be like everybody else, using textbook formulas, but to put ourselves into our weaving.”

Who's teaching?

Tien Chiu

Tien teaches visual design and the design process, especially color in weaving. She’s studied color for over a decade, weaving and dyeing thousands of samples to understand color interactions. She’s helped thousands of students design confidently with color.

Tien’s goal is to teach students the science behind designing with color, so they can design work that they love. She believes that a good teacher gives students the tools they need, then helps them explore their curiosity.

Janet Dawson

Janet teaches weave structure and weaving technique at the Handweaving Academy. She’s taught thousands of students in her online classes, and gets rave reviews for breaking down and teaching complex ideas in a way that’s easy to understand.

“Good cloth, happy weaver” is her mantra. Her goal is not to dictate How Things Should Be Done, but to provide information and options that allow you to decide for yourself how to achieve good cloth and enjoy yourself while making it.

"Always a fun, informative time when Tien and Janet get together to teach. I have taken all of their courses so far and continue to learn and grow as a weaver.

The courses are better than any I have taken before, far more relaxed than in-studio classes, and cover topics that are not covered elsewhere with the same depth and knowledge.

Thank you, Janet and Tien!"

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes!

We offer full project instructions for six sets of holiday towels – three designs for 4-shaft looms and three for 8-shaft looms. Colors are suitable for Christmas, Hanukkah, or Lunar New Year.

Running out of time? No problem! You’ll get lots of “Plan B” suggestions – great gifts made from unfinished projects.

Just warp and weave!

Yes! You’ll learn how to design with each holiday’s colors, whatever draft you choose. Create something your loved ones will treasure!

If you don’t want to design “from scratch,” we also offer suggestions for changing up our predesigned projects to make other things – scarves, shawls, baby blankets, and all sorts of table linens.

You don’t! You can use our design software with any device that runs a web browser. Nothing to download or install.

We’ll provide instructions and demos on using the design software, too.

(Using a tablet? A stylus will make your life easier.)

You should be able to weave from a draft + written project instructions. You do NOT need to have designed your own drafts.

You can weave the projects on a 4-shaft or 8-shaft loom with a weaving width of at least 24″.

Both! You get the best of both worlds.

The lessons are entirely self-paced (and available at the start of the class).

But you also get three live webinars/Q&A sessions, recorded for those who cannot attend live.

You’ll also get an in-class discussion forum where you can get quick answers to your questions.

Class access will expire at midnight Pacific Time, December 31, 2024.

If you join the Handweaving Academy, you’ll have access to all course materials and tools for as long as you’re a member – as well as dozens and dozens of other classes, powerful design tools, and lots of live events.

We want our students to be happy! If you’re not satisfied, you can get a full refund within the first 14 days of class.

No questions, nothing to fill out, no strings attached. Just drop us a line.

“I found this class so inspiring! I knew that you can't just slap red and green into any old draft and thought I understood the basic strategies for working with color. However, there were so many new discoveries for me in this class.

Thank you for this fresh approach.”
