Stash weaving made simple

great projects without buying a thing

We’ve all been there: a bin full of yarn, and no idea how to use it.

The mystery cones. The leftovers. The ones you fell in love with but never quite matched to a project.

You’re not sure how to put them together. So they sit there, waiting.

Let’s change that.

Understand your stash

mix and match yarns confidently

Got mystery yarns? Learn to identify them.

Choose compatible yarns, avoid common pitfalls, and find projects that work with what you already have.

Instead of hesitation, you’ll have a plan. Instead of crossed fingers, you’ll have confidence.

And you’ll finally get to create beautiful projects—right from your stash.

Weave a wonderful scarf

a fun project to apply what you've learned

It’s one thing to read about yarn compatibility. It’s another to choose your own yarns, weave them together, and make a wonderful project.

So let’s do both! This class includes an optional scarf project.

Design it yourself using yarn from your stash.

Ask questions, adjust, and learn by doing, alongside instructors and fellow weavers.

By the end, you’ll have a cozy, one of a kind scarf—
and the confidence that comes from solid experience.

(No time to weave the scarf? No worries! You’ll get downloadable project instructions so you can come back to it later.)

“The teaching is clear and concise. It’s visual as well as verbal. I’ve never felt like a question was unwarranted or stupid, although I’ve probably asked a few of those! And you don’t have to buy a kit. You use what you’ve got, and you develop your own skills at your own pace and level.”

About Your Instructor

Janet Dawson
The co-founder of the Handweaving Academy

Janet teaches weave structure and weaving technique at the Handweaving Academy. She’s taught thousands of students in her online classes, and gets rave reviews for breaking down and teaching complex ideas in a way that’s easy to understand.

“Good cloth, happy weaver” is her mantra. Her goal is not to dictate How Things Should Be Done, but to provide information and options that allow you to decide for yourself how to achieve good cloth and enjoy yourself while making it.

"Janet is by far the best weaving teacher I've yet encountered. I know that if I take a class with Janet, she’s going to break it down in a way that makes sense, and she’s going to make great use of my time.”"

Frequently Asked Questions

We do! The Handweaving Academy is an online school dedicated to helping weavers design projects that reflect their personal style—and bring them joy at the loom.

Our members explore every aspect of weaving, including:

  • color and visual design
  • weave structure and drafting
  • project planning.

Whether you’re looking to deepen your technical skills or gain more creative freedom, there’s something here for you.

A single membership gives you access to dozens of in-depth courses, plus live classes, webinars, and other content released every six weeks.

You don’t! The Draft Editor that you’ll use to create designs works in any browser, so the only thing you’ll need is a tablet or desktop/laptop computer. (We do recommend using a stylus for those using tablets, to make editing easier.)

The Draft Editor is easy to use. We’ll provide instructions and demos on how to use it, too.

No loom is required to to take the class. The optional scarf project is designed for four or eight shaft looms, but can easily be adapted for rigid heddle looms.

Nope! The scarf project is entirely optional. You’ll get plenty out of the class even if you don’t weave it.

You’ll get answers! You can post questions in each lesson’s built-in Q&A section, or ask them at the Live Q&A sessions that come with the class. If you have a question, we’ll make sure you get an accurate answer!

Both! You get the best of both worlds.

The lessons are entirely self-paced (and available at the start of the class), but you’ll get live webinars and Q&A sessions, as well as an in-class discussion forum where you can get answers to your questions. The live sessions are recorded, closed-captioned, and transcribed for those who cannot attend “live”.

Class lessons are prerecorded and are all available from the first day of class (May 3).

In addition, we have three live sessions to dive deeper and to answer your questions:

Live Lecture: May 4 (Sunday) 2-3pm Pacific
Q&A Session #1: May 7 (Wednesday) 4-5pm Pacific
Q&A Session #2: June 11 (Wednesday) 4-5pm Pacific

These sessions are all recorded so if you can’t make it live, you can send in any questions beforehand and watch the session afterwards, whenever you want.

You’ll have access to all materials and tools during the class (May 3 – June 27), and the project recipe is yours to keep.

If you join the Handweaving Academy, you’ll have access to all course materials and tools for as long as you’re a member – as well as dozens of other classes, powerful design tools, and lots of live events.

We want our students to be happy! If you’re not satisfied with the class, you can get a full refund within the first 14 days. No questions, nothing to fill out, no strings attached. Just drop us a line.

“I want to weave things where my relatives will say, 50 years from now, 'Oh, that was one of grandma’s!' With singers or musicians, you can always tell a person who has put a piece of their soul into their music. It comes out in their music.

And I think that the Handweaving Academy teaches us how to put that piece of our soul into our weaving. Not to just be like everybody else, using textbook formulas, but to put ourselves into our weaving.”
