Get the most out the Academy with our new drafting tools

Academy members now have access to even more of the drafting tools from Handweaving.net!

Members of the Academy have had access to the Color Editor or Draft Editor for years, but not to the newer drafting tools that have been added to Handweaving.net.  Thanks to help from HWN’s Kris Bruland, that’s recently changed. Now, members can use these tools while learning about structure and design in the Academy.

Four new tools have been added to the Academy’s Draft Editor interface:

  • Profiles
  • Draft Repeats
  • The Draft Arranger
  • The Color Editor

We’ll be working on new classes, demos, and documentation for all these new features, all added to make our easy-to-understand structure exercises accessible to members.

There is even more on Handweaving.net!

Do you have a subscription to Handweaving.net? Then you have access to these tools and more!

For one thing, the Amalgamation tool can only be found on Handweaving.net and is only available to HWN subscribers. If you haven’t played with it yet, you really should! Here are some examples of amalgamated drafts created by combining two other drafts from HWN’s collection:

You can see even more amalgamated drafts by searching for the “amalgamation” tag or keyword. (You don’t need to have a subscription to see the search results.)

Watch Kris’ video about Amalgamation Drafting on YouTube.

While Amalgamation is really, really cool, the best reason to subscribe to Handweaving.net is still the amazing library Kris has compiled of over 80,000(!!) drafts and counting. Kris adds new collections regularly and members of Handweaving.net contribute their own daily.

I also make heavy use of the hundreds of books and periodicals that are available on the site. There’s a wealth of information to compete with any guild’s library, right there waiting to be discovered, all free of charge.

In my opinion, a subscription to Handweaving.net is essential for any weaver who enjoys designing their own projects or anyone who really wants to understand the mechanics of weaving, no matter what loom they use. Combined with the classes at the Handweaving Academy, you can create your own unique textile by utilizing our courses on structure and texture, whether you are working on a gazillion-shaft loom or a rigid heddle. Together, we put the artistry of weaving within reach.
